GUELPH — Guelph high school teacher Brian Hathway is now facing a total of eight sex-related charges.
The longtime auto body teacher at College Heights was in bail court on Friday where five new charges were added to his list of alleged offences.
The 49-year-old was charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and obtain sexual services for consideration — under 18.
The five new charges are related to three different adult individuals, unconnected to the previous charges.
The new charges include two counts of sexual assault, two counts of communicating with a person for obtaining sexual services, and one count of attempting to procure or solicit a person to have illicit sexual intercourse.
The court granted his bail and he was released to a surety who posted $10,000 to free him from custody.
According to his bail conditions, he’s to be kept under strict house arrest in Kitchener, living with a friend.
A publication ban prevents any evidence heard in court from being published.
Hathway has been a teacher at College Heights Secondary School since 2003.
The Upper Grand District School Board released a statement, confirming that it was working in co-operation with the Guelph police investigation.
“We can confirm that the teacher is not at school during this ongoing investigation and the board has reported this situation to the Ontario College of Teachers. Investigations of this nature are very serious,” the school board said.
“We have a number of supports available to any students and staff who require it, including guidance, social workers, child and youth counselling, psychologists and employee assistance supports.
