Busch gets playoff victory in New Hampshire

-

LOUDON, N.H. — Kyle Busch earned a berth in the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs with a dominant victory Sunday at New Hampshire Motorspeedway. Busch slipped through smoke from a multicar crash on the backstretch that knocked out Martin Truex Jr.’s run at a second straight win and won for the third time this season. Busch, who won from the pole, joined Truex in the next round of the playoffs. The field is cut from 16 drivers to 12 following next week’s race at Dover International Speedway. Truex, who won the playoff opener at Chicagoland, led 112 laps early until he was caught up in a wreck that ended his shot at a sixth win. The playoff standings were shaken up in the wake of massive multi-car wreck that sent playoff drivers Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick to the garage. Kurt Busch, the Daytona 500 champion, will likely have to win next week at Dover to advance to the second round. Playoff drivers filled the top five spots: Kyle Larson was second, followed by Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski and Truex. Revolution, with a 2-1 Major League Soccer win, denied Toronto FC an opportunity to clinch the Supporters’ Shield on Saturday. Kamara scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute with a header off Nguyen’s cross. The Revs (11-4-5) avoided playoff elimination and extended their undefeated streak at home against Toronto FC (185-8) to six games. Toronto has three matches remaining to clinch the Shield with a magic number of three points. Nguyen opened the scoring for New England in the 82nd minute with his 50th career goal. Toronto FC’s Nicolas Hasler answered two minutes later. Forwards Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore missed the match for TFC, both due to lower-body tightness.
