Just let women be who they are
Re: Encouraging women to choose sciences, math — Sept. 26
Right now, everyone likes to talk about “gender-inequality” in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). I am a woman in STEM and offer a different perspective. Canada has equality of opportunity for women, and if they choose to go into lowerpaying jobs that they find more satisfying for other reasons, we should not attempt to make them regret their decisions. I never suffered from discouragement or discrimination — I simply chose to pursue what I was interested in.
Just let women be who they are, and stop making them feel bad because they found other things in their lives that are more important to them than making as much money as possible. I find it somewhat offensive that men like University of Waterloo president Feridun Hamdullahpur think that women need help making decisions about our own lives. Bethany Kuntz Kitchener
