“Love and First Sight” by Josh Sundquist (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers)

16-year-old Will is starting off the school year in poor fashion after accidentally groping a female student, sitting on the lap of another and then making another classmate burst into tears! This is definitely the type of entrance he was hoping to avoid. Will has left the security and familiarity of his former school for the visually impaired and is now, apparently, failing at staying under the radar at his new mainstream high school.

After initial setbacks, navigating school hallways becomes the least of Will’s challenges. As he develops a crush on one of his classmates he now has to navigate a new relationship with Cecily, a sighted girl who has a passion for photography.

His relationship with Cecily becomes strained when Will discovers he has the opportunity to regain vision through surgery. What about the surgery does Cecily find so unnerving? Will the surgery even work for him? And, how will Will confront friends and family about their betrayal?

Paralympian, Josh Sundquist writes his first novel with humour and compassion for both the usual and unique experiences in a teenage boy’s life. “Love and First Sight” is a thoughtful young adult romance novel and poignant coming-of-age tale.
