Waterloo’s twin Ford brothers top OUA all-rookie football team

BURLINGTON — With four players named to the Ontario University Athletics all-rookie football team, the future is bright for the Waterloo Warriors.

Quarterbac­k Tre Ford of Niagara Falls tops an impressive list of first-year players that includes his twin brother Tyrell, who played cornerback and returned kicks for Waterloo. Offensive tackle Spencer Andrews, a KCI grad, and defensive tackle Michael Perak, from Resurrecti­on, also made the list.

Tre Ford thrived in the team’s platoon system with Lucas McConnell and, in seven games, collected 673 passing yards on a 66.7 per cent completion rate. He also picked up another 717 yards on the ground on 77 rushes, culminatin­g in 10 touchdowns on the campaign.

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks placed three players on the all-rookie team, including linebacker Mario Pineda, a Cambridge native who played at Jacob Hespeler. Wide receiver Nick Petermann of Hamilton and running back Kavantye Bailey of Calgary also made the grade.

McMaster quarterbac­k Jackson White of Cambridge (Jacob Hespeler) was also honoured, along with Guelph linebacker Jared Beeksma (Cambridge, Jacob Hespeler), and Windsor defensive back Daniel Stirling (Waterloo, St. David).

The all-star team also features: Sander Mod (DT, Guelph); Alex Lavric (QB, Ottawa); Will Corby (WR, Toronto); Justice Allin (WR/ RB, McMaster); Tommy Nield (WR, McMaster); Alain Pae (DE, Ottawa); Kosi Onyeka (LB, Guelph); Ryan Isenor (KR, Guelph); Wyatt Edmonds (G/C/T, McMaster); Danny McWhirter (CB, Carleton); Tanner Bishop (OL, Ottawa); James Duffey Jr. (OL, York); Konner Burtenshaw (RB, Queen’s); Austin FordhamMil­ler (DT, Western); Danny Valente (DB, Western); and Daniel Loggale (DB, York).
