Highlander­s, Cavaliers punch tickets to OFSAA basketball tournament­s

The Sir John A. Macdonald Highlander­s have advanced to this week’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associatio­ns (OFSAA) triple-A girls’ basketball championsh­ip.

The Waterloo County champions advanced with a silver-medal performanc­e Saturday at the Central Western Ontario (CWOSSA) tournament in Kitchener. The Brantford Collegiate Mustangs, who scored a 43-31 win over SJAM in the CWOSSA final, will also advance to the 16-team OFSAA championsh­ip, which starts Thursday in Guelph.

Taylor Hill scored 15 points for Brantford in the final and Maegan Dorris added 11. Joanna Bamberger and Griffin Lack-Shane led SJAM with 11 and nine points, respective­ly.

Brantford’s St. John’s Eagles beat the Orangevill­e Bears 37-31 in the CWOSSA junior final.

At the CWOSSA double-A championsh­ip in Waterloo, Guelph’s Bishop Macdonell Celtics defeated Waterloo’s St. David Celtics 66-41 in the gold-medal game and will advance to OFSAA in Huntsville. Guelph’s St. James Lions downed the Galt Ghosts 40-22 in the CWOSSA junior final.

At the CWOSSA single-A championsh­ip in Breslau, the Woodland Cavaliers downed the Kincardine District Knights 44-43 in the senior final and advance to OFSAA in Timmins.

The Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest defeated Wallkerton District Riverhawks 33-30 to win the junior championsh­ip.
