Embracing change

Re: Staff ‘scared’ to come to work, Laurier prof says — Nov. 28

Perhaps now faculty and staff know how Laurier grad student Lindsay Shepherd feels. Maybe now meaningful change can happen but given Prof. Greg Bird and his petition, with its victim mentality front and centre, I am not holding out hope.

At Laurier, as Lindsay Shepherd so eloquently puts it, the classrooms are “echo chambers” for left-wing ideology. The majority of professors present leftleaning bias. They protect their own by covering left-leaning students, shielding and coddling them into snowflakes unable to acknowledge much less entertain any counter view. What kind of an education is that? Right-leaning students, according to Bird and his ilk, need to be shamed, indoctrinated and reprogrammed, exactly what they tried on treated Lindsey Shepherd. How did that work out?

Prof. Bird and his left-leaning professors need to wake up to reality. Their salary is paid by taxpayers and alumni donations. Alumni such as my spouse and I will not donate again to the university until free speech is restored. Laurier grads will not be hired by employers if their bias is this clear. Prospective students and parents will steer clear of WLU and who can blame them?

Perhaps it’s time for the leftleaning professors of WLU to wake up and embrace change. I think they have a lot to learn from Lindsay Shepherd. Luke David Kitchener
