- RICK BENTLEY

Two new DVD releases offer different looks at heroes.

“Only the Brave”: Joseph Kosinski’s “Only the Brave” is a deeply moving recounting of the events leading up to the death of 19 firefighters, known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots, while trying to protect the small town of Yarnell, Ariz., in 2013. A serious of unfortunate events put the crack firefighting team in the path of a massive fire that overwhelmed them, leaving only one survivor.

“Only the Brave” is a reminder of what real heroes look like and how they act. They can be your friends and neighbors who are only different in how they don’t hesitate when there is a chance to help others. The loss of one such hero is a tragedy. The loss of 19 is a devastating moment in time that should be honored with this kind of loving film tribute.

“Chris Claremont’s X-Men”: Director Patrick Meaney takes a look at one of the most influential writers in comic book history. Chris Claremont started at Marvel as a young man who had no intentions of working in the industry. But, that changed when he was assigned to write a book that no one else wanted because it was on the brink of cancellation: X-Men.

His work on the title over the next 17 years not only turned the comic into the biggest franchise in comic book history, but his stories have been adapted into 10 films, three TV series and countless video games. He also changed the way comics were written by going deep into personal stories and showing a willingness to take chances. The film points out Claremont’s success with X-Men is one of the biggest stories in comic book history.

Meaney’s production is a little sloppy, but the story he weaves is so interesting the flaws can be ignored. Available only through video on demand. Also new on DVD Feb. 6 “Suburbicon”: A perfect suburban world in 1959 hides dark secrets. Matt Damon stars.
