KITCHENER — This February, people are encouraged to take a day to look after themselves.

Feb. 21 has been declared “Me Day” by Carizon Family and Community Services — a day when people are encouraged to focus on self-care.

“It could be as simple as curling up with a good book and a cup of tea,” said Julie Newman, director of talent management and engagement at Carizon.

The agency is promoting selfcare to its employees this month as an antidote to the winter blues and is hoping community members and other organizations will take it to heart, too.

“We know that February can be cold and dark and the days are short,” said Shannon Nicholson, director of counselling.

The cold weather keeps many people indoors and away from stress-relieving pursuits such as physical activity and social activities.

“They may feel more limited,” Nicholson said.

But spring is still a long way off, and people are urged to get out and do things that nurture well-being.

Generally, human nature is to prioritize others, Newman said.

February’s holidays of Valentine’s Day and Family Day celebrate relationships and caring for others, and exclude some.

Carizon wanted a day to celebrate looking after ourselves, sparking Me Day.

“Part of wellness is also recognizing your personal wellness,” Newman said.

That encompasses physical, emotional, social and financial wellness — and all can inspire Me Day activities.

Going outside for a walk, practising yoga, meeting a friend for coffee or preparing a budget are among the suggestions offered.

“It could be anything,” Newman said.

People are encouraged to share their ideas on social media with the hashtag #MEdayWR.

“We’re really hoping it will catch on,” Nicholson said.
