Double golden Day 3 for Canada

PYEONGCHANG, KOREA, REPUBLIC OF — Five things to know from Day 3 of competition at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

GOLDEN SKATERS — Canada won its first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Olympics in the team figure skating competition. Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., clinched the top spot after finishing third in the women’s free skate. The gold medal was set up by three-time world champion Patrick Chan earlier in the day when he placed first in the men’s free program.

KING KINGSBURY — Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury captured his first Olympic title, winning gold in the men’s moguls. The 25-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Que., scored 86.63 in the final run to take top spot. Kingsbury, the World Cup leader and Sochi silver medallist, was the top qualifier after scoring 86.07 points Friday. He’s won six straight World Cup season titles and is on track for a seventh.

NICE COMEBACK — Canadian snowboarder Laurie Blouin returned from a nasty crash to win a silver medal in the women’s slopestyle. Sporting a black eye after crashing in training a few days ago, Blouin overcame high winds to nail a clean second run for 76.33 points. The reigning world champion from Stoneham, Que., was second behind American Jamie Anderson, who scored 83.00 on her first run.

MEDAL GUARANTEE — Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris earned Canada a spot in the Olympic mixed doubles curling final with an 8-4 win over Norway. It was Canada’s seventh win in eight outings at the tournament. Lawes left points on the table early on but made the big shots that counted late. The Canadians will face Switzerland in the final Tuesday.

WINNING FINALE — Christian Thomas had the eventual winner as Canada skated past Sweden 4-1 in a pre-Olympic exhibition. Mat Robinson had a power-play goal to tie the game 1-1 for Canada in the first period. Rene Bourque and Wojtek Wolski also scored. The Canadian men open their Olympic tournament Thursday against Switzerland.
