Chili cookoff, Seedy Saturday and hockey this weekend

WATERLOO REGION — Start planning your summer garden or vote for your favourite chili at a cook-off in Waterloo.

There’s a lot to do in the region this weekend, here’s the shortlist:

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to think about flowers and vegetables. The Kitchener Horticultu­ral Society is hosting a free event called Seedy Saturday, where guests can buy and swap seeds and to learn about all things gardening. There will be a number of vendors and seven seminars planned throughout the day on topics including small scale bee keeping, starting seeds and growing herbs indoors, determinin­g soil type and more.

Warm your bellies at the seventh annual Winterloo Chili Cook-off. Restaurant­s participat­ing in the event include Abe Erb, Beertown, Copper Branch, Little Mushroom Catering, Lou Dawg’s, and Stark & Perri. For $5 you can sample and vote for your favourite chili in the People’s Choice category; children 10 years of age and younger are free. A panel of judges that includes Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky, will also award a winner. Proceeds from the event will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Get a front row view of Kitchener’s very own “Winter Classic” as tyke minor hockey players compete to win the Mayor’s Cup in Carl Zehr Square. There will also be games for all ages, inflatable play areas inside the Kitchener City Hall rotunda and a charity barbecue. Show your support for the players at the free event at city hall.

This weekend the Kitchener Market is hosting an Everything Women Show. Spend the day at the market and enjoy seminars on health and wellness, beauty tips and more. There will be a number of vendors and a licensed area with local craft beverages. Tickets for the event are $5 each.

Enjoy a tasty breakfast at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126 in Cambridge. There will be fried or scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, toast and refreshmen­ts. The cost is $7 per person and for those nine years of age and younger it’s $2.
