Reasoning behind hospital ‘safe access zone’ disingenuous
Re: Freeport applying for safe access zone after community outpouring — Feb. 20
SHORE, formerly Planned Parenthood, asked that a “safe access zone” be available at Freeport Hospital for any woman going to the hospital for the termination of her pregnancy.
The reasoning behind this request is disingenuous because volunteers who pray at the side of the road leading into Freeport do not harass, heckle, or make gestures that cause distress.
The aim of the group at the side of the road is to pray for the unborn children and their mothers.
It is obvious that those praying are unable to identify whether the cars entering the hospital grounds are carrying mothers about to terminate their pregnancies because the cars might carry individuals for any number of medical procedures or even patient visits. The praying people are thus unable to “harass” the small number of termination cases.
Judging by passing cars and trucks with honks and friendly waves it would suggest much broader public support than SHORE would acknowledge. Yes, there is the odd “finger” that is usually acknowledged with a return wave and a smile.
Freedom of expression is one of our cardinal freedoms. It is one of the hallmarks of a free and stable society.
It must not be allowed to be undermined by unsubstantiated, anonymous charges. Let truth and freedom reign.
