WCI swimmers sink records at OFSAA meet
WINDSOR — Three teams from Waterloo Collegiate established new records at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association swim championship.
The outstanding achievement helped WCI finish second overall in the team standings, while winning first place in both the open boys and open girls divisions. The WCI team, comprised of 13 swimmers, is coached by Rhonda Notarfranco, Ashley McCarl Palmer, Sara Milks and Paige Frigault.
Canek Bracho Maganda, Fergus Park, Christian Iveson and Disala de Silva added their names to the history books first, winning the 200-metre open medley relay in one minute, 47.66 seconds to break the previous mark of 1:49.88, set by St. Theresa of Lisieux in 2016. WCI also shattered an OFSAA record in the 400-metre open boys freestyle, with Bracho Maganda, Ian Friesen, de Silva and Iveson winning in 3:34.79. The old mark of 3:40.26 was set in ’010 by Resurrection.
Bracho Maganda added a third gold medal to his collection by winning the open boys 50-metre freestyle in 23.88 seconds. Friesen won the 200-metre open boys freestyle in 1:58.90, and Iveson was third in the 100-metre open butterfly.
The WCI team of Emma Frey, Sarah Chapman, Sophie Richard and Tori Meklensek set an OFSAA record in the 400-metre open freestyle, winning in 3:59.49. The previous mark of 4:00.33 was set by John F. Ross of Guelph in 2012.
Lauren Mage of St. Benedict won the 200-metre open girls freestyle in 2:03.31, finishing ahead of Meklensek and Richard of WCI. Mage also won silver in the 100-metre open girls freestyle. Richard was third in the 100metre open butterfly and Frey was second in the 100-metre open girls individual medley.
The KCI relay team of Qiana Englert, Oliva Sargla, Olivia Clay and Justine Hodson also made it to the top of the podium, winning the junior girls 200-metre freestyle relay in 2:02.77. Hodson also won gold in the 100-metre freestyle, in 1:03.56, was second in the junior girls freestyle, and Englert was third in the junior girls 50metre backstroke.
Grace Parker of Elmira won the junior girls 100-metre individual medley in 1:14.67 and was third in the 50-metre freestyle.
Kina Kim of Sir John A. Macdonald was third in the senior girls 100-metre breaststroke.
Curling
The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels team of Sarah Mather (skip), Olivia Lupsa (vice), Lindsey Schmalz (second) and Cassidy Lake (lead) has captured the Central Western Ontario championship and will move on to the March 20-24 OFSAA curling championship in Fort Frances.
