Hall of Famer QB Kelly announces cancer has returned

- JOHN HEALY New York Daily News

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly is battling cancer again.

The Buffalo Bills legend, who has beaten oral cancer twice, announced on Thursday it has returned.

“As our family has faced many trials and triumphs throughout the years, you have blessed us with your prayers. We are asking for those prayers once again,” Kelly said.

“The oral cancer we hoped would be gone forever has returned.

“Although I was shocked and deeply saddened to receive this news, I know God is with me. I continuously talk with the four F’s: Faith, Family, Friends and Fans. With all of you by my side, we will fight and win this battle together. Staying ‘Kelly Tough’ and trusting God will carry us through this difficult time.”

Kelly, 58, was first diagnosed with oral cancer in 2013 and had underwent surgery to remove it in his upper jaw.

It returned again in March 2014, but in July 2016 he was declared cancer-free.

The Buffalo Bills, whom Kelly spent his entire 11-year NFL career with and led to four straight Super Bowl appearances, released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to hear the news about Jim Kelly and his impending battle with cancer. Jim is a tough and courageous man and we know he will fight this battle with strength and determination. The Buffalo Bills will support the Kelly family during this trying time and we ask our fans to pray for the family as Jim begins the treatment process and road to recovery.”

Kelly’s wife, Jill, also posted a lengthy message on Instagram saying the family is “shocked, heartbroken, sad, angry, confused and just darn tired.”

The Giants also wished Kelly and his family well in his hopeful recovery.

“Sending thoughts and prayers to Jim Kelly, his family and the @buffalobills organization. #KellyTough,” the team tweeted.

Kelly was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
