Preston students rally for U.S. students

CAMBRIDGE — So why should Canadian high schoolers join American high schoolers to protest gun violence in the U. S.?

“I say that we are all youths even if we are separated by a border. And we are inspired by their passion,” Daisy Nguyen, 16, told her schoolmates Friday at Preston High School.

Solidarity was the message when about 150 Preston students rallied during their lunch period.

They carried signs and held a moment of silence to argue for gun control and to support American students who are demonstrating Saturday for that purpose in Washington, D.C.

“They have inspired us so

much,” Riley Porter, 16, told the Preston crowd. “Our voices are young but they matter.”

Preston students posed for a group photo in front of their school. It’s to be sent to organizers of the U.S. rally to let American students know they have support in Canada.

The U.S. demonstration called March for Our Lives was organized after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting left 17 dead in Parkland, Fla. on Feb. 14.

Parkland survivors helped to organize Saturday’s demonstration which will take place in the U.S. capital and in other cities.

Preston’s student rally was sanctioned by the school. Students purchased buttons and carried placards saying ‘Disarm Hate’ and ‘We Stand in Support.’

Porter helped to organize the rally after watching U.S. students demand gun control.

“It just inspired me so much to see that you can make change,” she said in an interview. “They’re just like me and they’re making their voices heard.”
