Dam decision embarrassing
Re: Costs be damned: Riverside Park dam saved — March 8
I really didn’t think it would get this far, but after reviewing all of the available information, what logical person would?
When the removal of an archaic piece of infrastructure is supported by countless hours of biological study, numerous accounts from well-informed and good-natured stakeholder groups, and hundreds of thousands of dollars of unbiased environmental reporting, the decision should be easy.
Welcome to Cambridge, where council members abandon logic and ignore all recommendations in favour of a small group of passionate and vocal Prestonians.
As an aquatic biologist, an avid fisherman and environmentalist, and as a fellow taxpaying Preston resident — born and raised — the decision to rebuild the dam is not only mind-boggling, it’s embarrassing.
I encourage those who fear change and cling to this piece of Preston heritage to look at other success stories featuring dam removals, including projects like the Crooks Hollow dam removal and the restoration of Spencer Creek.
Perhaps this will lead to the realization that a healthy river is the best heritage we can leave for future generations.
