KITCHENER — Cavell Johnson will stay on as head coach of the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans.

The National Basketball League of Canada franchise, which limped to an 8-32 regularseason record and failed to make the playoffs, made the signing official Monday. Johnson took over the coaching from Serge Langis on Feb. 25 and won three of 13 games down the stretch.

“Cavell did a tremendous job of resetting the team’s culture and motivating our players as we finished the 2017-18 season in a very positive direction,” said Titans owner Leon Martin.

“Cavell’s ability to communicate and forge strong relationships will go a long way in retaining and recruiting the talent we need to build a winning program next season.”

Johnson, from Fort Washington, Md., played college basketball at James Madison University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

After college, he made stops in China, Hungary, Greece and Finland and was the NBL Canada defensive player of the year in 2014.

He played for the Titans during their inaugural season and was resigned by the franchise as a player just one week before taking over as coach.

“I am blessed and thankful for the opportunity to continue serving as head coach of the K-W Titans,” said Johnson.

“We built a lot of positive momentum at the end of this past season, with our players demonstrating the mental toughness and team cohesiveness that are pivotal to a successful program.”

Tickets are now on sale for the Titans’ 2018-19 basketball campaign by calling 1-800-265-8977 or at the Auditorium box office.
