Snowflake gets reprieve

Cambridge resident Tracy Baker is elated Cambridge council is allowing Snowflake the pot-bellied pig to stay while bylaws are reviewed.

Snowflake, the pot-bellied pig told to start packing due to animal control bylaws prohibiting it from living in urban city limits, will be allowed to remain at home thanks to a Cambridge city council decision to direct city staff to review the law and report back next year.

City Coun. Nicholas Ermeta, who visited Snowflake and her owner Tracy Baker and backed a request to allow the domesticated pet to remain in Cambridge, led the charge to ask the bylaw to be suspended and reviewed, with a report coming back to council in 2019.

Mayor Doug Craig chuckled the well-known pig appears to be safe for now.

Following the council meeting, Baker expressed relief her pet companion could stay with her in her Can-Amera Parkway apartment. And she’s praying it will stay that way.

“I’m glad that they are willing to suspend the bylaw until 2019 until they investigate more,” she told the Cambridge Times.

“I just hope they don’t let closed minded people cloud their judgment. Pigs are clean, easy to train and are just as lovable as a dog or cat.”
