Wellesley house fire displaces seven residents
WELLESLEY — Seven residents living in a house converted into four apartments on Nafziger Road near Doering Street just outside Wellesley were displaced from their homes Sunday afternoon after the structure caught fire.
Wellesley Fire Department received the call at 12:34 p.m. Sunday.
Three residents were at home when the fire broke out, the other four were away.
No one was hurt, there were no pets in the building and all residents were moved to other accommodations with the assistance of the Red Cross.
The fire is believed to have started in a garbage bin adjacent the house.
The flames then spread to the nearest apartment and moved on from there.
The most significant damage was to the roof and there was heavy water damage.
As well, the house next door sits on a lower grade and it also received water damage.
Wellesley Fire Department with the help of neighbouring fire departments including Baden and New Hamburg arrived on the scene quickly and the fire was put out within an hour.
Wellesley fire chief Paul Redman said it’s too early to determine the extent of the damage until the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office conducts an investigation. It’s also too early to tell if the structure can be salvaged.
