MAKING MONEY WORK IN OTHER WAYS

-

You have learned that you can earn money, spend it, save it, invest it but you can also share it. You can put money to work by using it to help those who are in need or to help support a specific cause that is important to you. Protecting the environment for example or helping save an animal at risk of extinction, or building wells in third world countries so villagers can access clean water. How you choose to share your money is a very personal decision. Understanding how to use money – to benefit yourself and others – will help you today and well into the future. Money – spend, save, invest and share it wisely!

Newspaper Activity

Work with a partner to write a letter to the editor. First read the letters to the Editor in today’s Newspaper and discuss the ideas below in order to understand which elements are required in a letter to the editor. • Letters to the editor express a reader’s opinions. • They are a short essay in which an opinion is stated, then supported by fact and background information. • Letters to the editor end with a concluding sentence or paragraph.

Topics

Write your letter based on one of the topics provided below. You can choose a pro or a con stance for your chosen topic. Ask your teacher for blackline master 8. This will help you organize your ideas. • With all the techno-gadgets that exist today and the wide access to technology there is no need to have hard currency – coins and paper money are a thing of the past. • With all the ABMs available and the ability to conduct banking transactions online there is no reason for banks to have buildings for branches. • With all the technology available today and the various platforms I can use to get the news there is no need for a print edition of the newspaper. The print edition is a thing of the past. • It is not important that Canadian money be distinctive from that of other countries. We should use the same currency the world over.

Fundraising Plan

Speaking of sharing - we have now come to the point when you must put all the elements of your fundraising campaign together and submit them to Newspapers in Education for prize consideration. Remember, 3 winners will be selected and Newspapers in Education at Waterloo Region Record will donate $100 to the winners’ chosen cause. Work as a class to determine what presentation format your plan will take. Will you produce a video, a “live” presentation, a storyboard or photographic essay for example? The only stipulation is that you include samples of your print ads and descriptions of any other ads you created (ie., audio or “live” advertisements). You must also provide contact information by completing and submitting blackline master 9 with your presentation. All fundraising campaign plans must be submitted to Newspapers in Education at Waterloo Region Record by close of business Thursday, June 14, 2018. Ask your teacher for the address.
