Warriors, Golden Hawks aim for glory
The University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are flying the local colours at this week’s Canadian University/ College golf championship at the Chilliwack Golf Club in Chilliwack, B.C.
The tournament, in its 16th year, was established by Golf Canada in 2003 to give the country’s top university and college golfers a chance to compete at a national championship.
Waterloo is competing in the 20-team men’s event and also has an entry in the 12-team women’s competition.
Wilfrid Laurier is competing in the men’s tournament, which last year was won by Université Laval Rouge et Or. The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds won the women’s competition for the second straight year.
Waterloo is represented by Andrew Cooke (Hammonds Plains, N.S.), Isaac Maxwell (Mono), Sam Kreze (Kitchener), Jordy Denomme (Waterloo) and Tyson Turchankski (Calgary) in the men’s event and Claire Konning (Moncton), Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi (Cambridge) and Laura Wesselius (Petitcodiac, N.B.) in the women’s tournament.
Henry Luel (Oakville), Jack Quirke (Waterloo), Ryan Murphy (Ancaster), Andrew Cox (Kitchener) and Austin Ryan (Owen Sound) are competing for Laurier.
The tournament, which started Tuesday, is a 72-hole stroke play event with a 54-hole cut.
The field was reduced to the top 10 men’s teams and top six women’s teams, in addition to individuals who are within 15 shots of the lead.
Players within 10 shots of third place will also play all four days, along with any player within the top 10. A local team has yet to win a team championship but Waterloo swept the individual titles in 2012 when Garrett Rank of Elmira won the men’s event and Devon Rizzo of Brantford was the top woman.
Strong outings for locals
Waterloo’s Dylan Henderson and Bennett Ruby turned in top-10 performances at last weekend’s Future Links Ontario championship at Otter Creek Golf Club in Otterville.
