Area students strike gold at provincial track and field champs

TORONTO — Marcus Kemp and Alex Webb each returned home from the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associatio­ns track and field championsh­ip with two gold medals.

Kemp, from St. Mary’s, captured his second first-place finish of the meet Saturday, when he won the senior boys’ 3,000-metre race in 8:26.32, edging Evan Burke of London South at the finish line.

Kemp also won the 1,500-metre race Friday.

Webb, from St. Benedict, won her second gold in the junior girls’ javelin, with an OFSAA record throw of 43.98 metres. She also won the shot put Friday.

Emma Lemieux of KCI also struck gold Saturday, winning the junior girls’ high jump with a 1.66-metre effort. Callum Parkison of St. David turned in a goldmedal performanc­e in the junior boys’ high jump, winning with a leap of 1.93-metres.

Kenny Siharath of Cameron Heights won silver in the senior boys’ long jump at 6.97 metres; Mackenzie Morgan of KCI was third in the senior girls’ 800-metre race (2:09.89); Tegan Morrison of Sir John A. Macdonald was second in the junior girls’ 800-metre race (2:16.15); Tamara Grahovac of Cameron Heights was third in the senior girls’ long jump (5.55 metres); Markeiths Flannigan of Glenview Park was third in the midget boys’ triple jump (12.92 metre); and Corey Schoenherr of Bluevale was third in the midget boys’ discus (45.23 metres).

On Friday, Justin Hodson of KCI finished second in the junior girls’ pole vault (3.20 metres).

Soccer

The Woodland Cavaliers captured the OFSAA girls’ soccer championsh­ip Saturday, scoring a 1-0 win over St. Michael CHS, of Kemptville, in the final.

The St. Mary’s Eagles fell, 1-0, to Cardinal Newman in the quarter-final round of the OFSAA triple-A girls’ championsh­ip. Cardinal Newman went on to win the bronze medal.

The St. David Celtics won bronze at the OFSAA boys’ double-A championsh­ip.
