CAMBRIDGE — A Preston home was surrounded by police on Friday morning in an attempt to arrest a man on allegations of assault.

Waterloo Regional Police arrived outside the Duke Street residence at around 7:30 a.m., following an alleged assault in the home on Thursday night that was reported Friday morning.

“We were told the gentleman was inside,” said Insp. Mike Haffner of the Waterloo Regional Police.

Police asked on social media that people avoid the area while they were outside the home. The contingent included a team of emergency response officers, containment officers, detectives and negotiators.

“It’s quite a lot of resources involved,” Haffner said.

Police were outside the Cambridge home for more than five hours.

Two people eventually exited and were detained for questioning at the police station. Police entered the home just after 1 p.m., and it was cleared.

No one was arrested. Police believe the man they were looking for left the home before they arrived due to the delay between the assault and when it was reported.

A man injured in the assault was assessed in hospital and released.

Police continue to investigate and are not immediately releasing further details about the assault or suspect.
