KITCHENER — A 22-year-old man is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a Kitchener man in June.

Jeremy Winnan appeared in a Kitchener courtroom Friday and was ordered detained in custody.

Ronald Chandler, 66, was found dead in his rental unit on Courtland Avenue East June 18. He was stabbed.

Winnan is charged with seconddegree murder, with committing an indignity to a dead body by “dismembering a part of his body,” and with breaching a probation order that he not have a weapon.

Chandler was a twice-convicted sex offender who was on a sex offender registry.

Police spokesperson Cherri Greeno said Winnan and Chandler did not know each other.

The indignity charge relates to “evidence that was gathered at the scene that would suggest preparations were being made to dispose of the body,” Greeno said. Winnan was already in custody on another matter when he was brought from the Maplehurst Detention Centre and charged with murder, Greeno said. Court records show him with no fixed address.

Winnan, clean-shaven with short brown hair, looked around the courtroom from the prisoner’s docket before standing to hear the charges read. He wore a blue collar shirt over a white T-shirt and grey pants.

A court order names 14 witnesses whom the accused may not contact. Another court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 21. Winnan will appear by video.

Defence lawyer Hal Mattson acted on Winnan’s behalf Friday. He declined to comment, saying he has yet to see evidence from the prosecution.
