Order of Canada honour for Waterloo professor
WATERLOO — A University of Waterloo professor will be named an Officer of the Order of Canada this Thursday at Rideau Hall.
Keith Hipel is a leader in systems design engineering and has been a professor for more than 40 years. According to his online bio, Hipel has “developed innovative decision models that have been used to design environmental strategies and address pollution conflicts worldwide. His interdisciplinary systems approach has been applied to such wide-ranging challenges as the management of water levels in the Great Lakes and sustainable energy development.”
Hipel has earned three degrees at UW, including his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1970, his master’s degree in systems design engineering in 1972 and his PhD in civil engineering in 1975.
The former president of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada has been recognized with numerous other awards during his career:
• Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Eminent Scientist Award
• Honorary degrees in France and Hungary
• Sir John William Dawson Medal (Royal Society of Canada)
• Engineering Medal for Research and Development (Professional Engineers Ontario)
• Distinguished Teacher Award
• Faculty of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award
• Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision
• Outstanding Engineering Educator Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Canada
Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. Nearly 7,000 people have been named recipients of the Order, one of the country's highest honours.
Gov. Gen. Julie Payette will invest the eight Officers and 31 Members into the Order of Canada on Thursday morning at Rideau Hall. The event will be streamed live online at www.gg.ca/live.
