Spreading the word about medically-assisted dying

-

Re: ‘Ron did this for the people he loved. He did this for us’ — Aug. 25

It is often said that adversity builds character. However, in our case adversity revealed character.

I am writing in regard to the front-page story that explained our family journey through our life, and, in this situation, life-ending decisions.

The reporter, Johanna Weidner, took great time and passion to explain how we have faced difficult choices that some may or may not have been aware of, or agree or disagree with. Her ability to articulate and explain the options we have as a free society was nothing less than superb.

I have seen the results of this story and how it has sparked both supportive and less than supportive conversations. I can with a little bias understand one person’s thoughts and beliefs on their feelings of the right to die with dignity as my Ron did.

Many whom we have written and spoken with believe that the story has helped their family to be more educated and informed, and for that our family and most importantly, Ron, are incredibly pleased, as this is and has been our goal to spread the word about the MAID (medical assistance in dying) program.

To those who have taken the time over the past year to support us, including doctors, nurses, friends, and family, we will be eternally thankful for continuing Ron’s message and legacy as we move forward with our lives.

I end with a thank you to all involved in telling our story.
