Studio tour, Hespeler harvest festival and a powwow this weekend in the region

WATERLOO REGION — Attend a powwow, plant trees at a community event or check out the Hespeler Village Festival.

There’s a lot to do in the region this weekend. Here’s the shortlist:

The University of Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre is hosting the 15th annual St. Paul’s University College Pow Wow in Waterloo Park. The free event is open to all and will include traditiona­l drum groups, dancers, craft vendors and exhibits.

Take in some live music, a pie-eating contest, pumpkin bowling, minigolf, a barbecue and more at the ninth annual Hespeler Village Harvest Festival. The familyfrie­ndly event also offers tours of Cambridge Fire Station two and story time at the Hespeler Idea Exchange.

Take a self-guided tour of art studios in the Cambridge community. The Cambridge Studio Tour runs Saturday and Sunday and includes nearly 20 featured artists. Artists participat­ing will showcase furniture, photograph­y, recycled clothing, home decor, jewelry, pottery, paintings and more. To learn more, visit www.cambridgec­entreforth­earts.ca.

Enjoy the outdoors and do some gardening during the TD Tree Days community planting event near Bechtel Park. Help plant 350 native trees and shrubs to help expand the woodland edge. Participan­ts have to wear

closed-toe shoes and are asked to bring a water bottle — gloves and refreshmen­ts will be provided and city staff will be on hand with tools. To attend, register at tdtreedays.com.

Learn all about dirt. Shade’s Mills Park is hosting a family-friendly workshop all about soil. Equipped with shovels, trowels and sieves, staff will guide the group in sampling soil and discoverin­g different habitats. The program is 90 minutes long and children under the age of 14 have to be accompanie­d by an adult. The event is free with the price of admission to the park.
