Snow kidding: Calgary gets help removing snow

- MARY GETANEH

CALGARY — The morning commute proved difficult in Calgary after a record dump of wet, heavy snow covered city streets and sidewalks — prompting the city to call in reinforcements from neighbouring areas.

A Snowfall Warning is in effect for the city of Calgary and parts of the city reported up to 40 cm in a 12 hour period. Environment Canada is forecasting another 5 to 10 cm of snow to fall throughout this evening, tapering off toward Wednesday.

Visibility is expected to be a challenge overnight and through the morning hours.

Dan Kulak, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said Tuesday marks a record breaking snowfall on the single calendar day of October 2.

“For October 2, the record for one day snowfall, is only 4.6 cm in 1954 so we’ve already beat that one,” Kulak said.

Kulak said the record breaking snow fall in one day in all of October was about 29.7 centimetres in 1914.

Kulak said between six p.m. to midnight the Calgary Airport saw about four centimetres. From midnight to six a.m. there was another 14 centimetres and from six a.m. to 11 a.m. there was another seven centimetres.

“Snowfalls in October are not unusual.

Some of the biggest snowfalls that Calgary sees are in the shoulder seasons- October, November and March April,” Kulak said.

“Big snowfalls in Calgary are more often in October and November or March and April.”

The City of Calgary has also issued a snow route parking ban, which will take effect Wednesday at 10 a.m.

“We are continuing to work hard through this thing. The good news, we don’t think there is significant damage to the tree canopy, we’re not seeing ‘snowtember’ again,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said
