WHAT ARE THEY?

Custom foot orthotics are prescription medical devices, designed to adjust and control the functions of the foot and its alignment with the lower leg. They are crafted for you and no one else. They match the contours of your feet precisely and are designed for the way you move. Over-the-counter shoe inserts can add additional cushioning and support, but they are not made to address your distinct foot issues. Only a prescription orthotic can accommodate your unique foot structure.

WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

Chiropodists (Foot Specialists) prescribe and use orthotics to treat foot problems, such as: · plantar fasciitis · tendinitis · bursitis · shin splints · neuromas · flat feet and high arches · diabetic foot ulcers · foot, ankle, knee and heel pain

HOW ARE THEY MADE?

Genuine, custom foot orthoses are only manufactured after a Chiropodist conducts a detailed Biomechanical Assessment, Gait Analysis and takes a 3-D laser scan of your feet. Following the exam, the practitioner will send your casts/scans to a professional lab, where your orthoses are made by technicians with appropriate training and qualifications.

TWO CATEGORIES OF ORTHOTICS

Functional Orthotics are designed to control abnormal pronation. They may be used to treat foot pain caused by abnormal motion, such as flat feet or high arched feet, and also to treat injuries, such as shin splints or tendinitis. Functional orthotics are usually crafted from a semi-rigid material, such as plastic or graphite. Accommodative Orthotics are softer and meant to provide additional cushioning and support. They can be used to treat diabetic foot ulcers, painful calluses on the bottom of the foot, and other uncomfortable conditions.

QUALIFIED ORTHOTICS PROVIDER

Many different healthcare providers offer orthotics. It is important to choose one with professional qualifications and training in foot and ankle anatomy, biomechanics and disorders of the foot, including diabetes, arthritis, and other foot and ankle pathologies. The combination of the right qualifications, training and experience means that your feet will be in the right hands.

The prime goal at Family Foot and Orthotics Clinic is to keep you moving pain free, so give them a call and put your family foot health in the right hands!
