Racist social media posts being investigated by school board
KITCHENER — Racist social media posts allegedly made by students from a Kitchener high school are being investigated by the Waterloo Region District School Board.
On Tuesday, the school board said it had been made aware of “inappropriate and disturbing social media posts” that went up over the long weekend. A Twitter account, @hafsanation, called out students and the board for the racist language and Ku Klux Klan imagery allegedly posted by students from Huron Heights Secondary School.
Alana Russell, chief communications officer with the board, confirmed the students believed to be involved are from Huron Heights. Two students are alleged to have made the posts, the school board said.
“We have a few students that we believe are responsible and we’ve made the recommendation with police that those students not return to school immediately and that they stay off of school indefinitely while we determine any potential disciplinary processes for them,” she said.
School staff contacted the families of those believed to be involved as well as Waterloo Regional Police. A school resource officer was at the school Tuesday to look further into the matter.
Russell said the school board is proud of the students who brought the issue forward and “stood up and said, ‘this is not acceptable.’”
