Man charged with murder in death of Guelph security guard
Police searching for witnesses to incident at Via Rail station on Wednesday evening
GUELPH — A Guelph man is facing a charge of murder in connection with an incident at a Via Rail station on Wednesday night.
Guelph police were called to the station on Carden Street at about 8:45 p.m. for the report of a disturbance. When they arrived they found a 63-year-old man who was working as a security guard at the train station with lifethreatening injuries.
He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.
Jordan Langelier, a 21-year-old Guelph man, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder in connection with this death.
He was seen in bail court on Thursday morning. A publication ban has been issued preventing any evidence presented at the hearing from being reported.
Langelier was held in police custody and is to appear in court by video on Jan. 21.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, is confirmed to be an employee of GardaWorld security services.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of one of our employees from the Guelph branch. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of our colleague during this difficult time,” said a GardaWorld spokesperson. “We are providing our full co-operation to the local Guelph police authorities in their investigation. As it is ongoing, we are not in a position to provide more information.”
Const. Kyle Grant said police were notified about a disturbance or fight by a witness on Wednesday evening.
Grant said police are looking for witnesses to come forward to describe what they saw. He said it happened early enough that there were likely people around who may have seen something behind the train station.
