How to talk to your children about COVID-19

-

Are you wondering how to talk to your children about the coronavirus pandemic? Here are some tips to help you.

Be honest

Children need to be informed so they can take the right precautions. The best approach is to tell them about the situation without downplaying it or adopting an alarmist attitude. Gently explain to them why they can’t go to school, visit their grandparents or hug their friends. Be sure to give them clear information, including about how to

protect themselves.

Be empathetic

Modify how you talk to your children based on their age. If your kids are still in elementary school, avoid listening to news reports with them. Also, be sure to tell them that it’s normal to be frustrated, afraid or sad about the restrictions and changes they must adapt to. Make sure your children know that if they have questions, they can turn to you for answers. For your part, be informed so that you can answer their questions as much as possible.

Be present

During this difficult period, listen to your children. Give them as much attention as possible and make sure to provide them with opportunities to have fun and relax. If you’re separated from them for any reason, maintain regular contact by phone or video call to reassure them. Parents need to keep their children informed about the current pandemic. By being honest, empathetic and present, these talks will have a positive impact on your kids and help keep them safe.
