WATERLOO REGION — Police continue to target aggressive drivers, charging more than a dozen motorists with stunt driving over the weekend.

Traffic officers were out on area highways and roadways and stopped drivers for excessive speeds with the highest speed clocked at168 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Speedsville Road in Cambridge.

With most residents abiding by stay-at-home rules and city streets being fairly empty, street racing has become a problem.

Ontario Provincial Police officers are also working with Waterloo Regional Police in the road safety blitz, Operation Overpass. Police stopped a driver speeding at 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 7/8 and King Street in Kitchener. Others included 159 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 7/8 at Courtland Avenue and 111 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Fairway Road North in Kitchener.

Officers also stopped speeders on Highway 7/8 at Homer Watson Boulevard, Sportsworld Drive and Wellington Street North in Kitchener. Vehicles were impounded and driver’s licences were suspended. In another case, a licence plate was removed after police said the tires had almost no tread and metal cords were exposed.

A 46-year-old Sarnia man was also charged with impaired driving when he was stopped on Highway 401 near King Street. The driver stopped on the shoulder of the roadway in front of a cruiser.

The driver faces numerous charges, including impaired operation, over 80, plates not authorized for the vehicle and drive suspended.
