Golden Hawks land highly touted QB Elgersma
WATERLOO — Taylor Elgersma, one of the top-ranked quarterback prospects in Ontario, has committed to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
Elgersma is a six-foot-five student-athlete from Oakridge Secondary School in London and a former standout with the London Jr. Mustangs of the Ontario Provincial Football League. The signing was announced by Golden Hawks head coach Michael Faulds.
“Adding a quarterback as big, strong and intelligent as Taylor to this recruiting class is fantastic,” Faulds said in a news release. “Taylor was at our high school camp last spring and we were super impressed with how he threw the ball and how he carries himself.
“What is equally impressive is that he wants to study kinesiology and has over a 90 per cent average. We feel confident that we are getting a very high-end, all-round student-athlete.”
Elgersma is coming off an impressive season at Oakridge, leading the Oaks to a playoff berth and throwing for close to 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in seven games.
Last summer with the London Jr. Mustangs, he led the team to a regular-season record of six wins and two losses and completed 87 of 148 pass attempts for 1,128 yards. He also threw nine touchdowns and just two interceptions. He helped the team reach the championship game where they fell to the Essex Ravens.
“I am excited to compete for the Golden Hawks,” said Elgersma. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity to help this team win and continue success. The program is a great fit for me and I’m thankful to be a part of it.”
The Golden Hawks have yet to unveil their full 2020 recruiting class.
