WATERLOO — Troy Stevenson and Jessica Roque have been hired to lead the men’s and women’s basketball programs at the University of Waterloo.

Stevenson was the interim head coach of the men’s team last season after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach. The Oakville native becomes the eighth head coach in the 62-year history of the program.

“I am extremely happy to continue to represent this outstanding institution in a fulltime role,” said Stevenson. “I look forward to growing with the outstanding alumni, community and student body here at Waterloo. I would like to thank (athletic director) Roly Webster and (associate director) Brian Bourque for the opportunity, and I cannot wait to be back on campus and in the gym with our student-athletes.”

Stevenson graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2015 with a chemical engineering degree and was a member of the Warriors for three seasons (2010-13).

Prior to joining Waterloo’s coaching staff, Stevenson spent two seasons as an assistant at McMaster and was a part of its run to the CIS National Championship in 2014-15.

Roque makes the move from the Ryerson Rams, where she has spent the past four seasons as the fulltime assistant coach.

With the Rams, Roque was the lead in preparing in-game tactics, practice facilitation, game film breakdown, recruiting and other tasks.

The Mississauga native also led Ryerson in an interim headcoaching role in the summer of 2018 during an international competition in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

“I am both excited and grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Waterloo Warriors,” said Roque. “I’m looking forward to working with the bright young women on the team and engaging with the K-W community.

“I want to thank Brian and Roly for welcoming me into the program. I would also like to thank Carly Clarke and Ryerson University for affording me the experience and helping develop the expertise I need to successfully lead this Warrior program. I am committed to growth and change in order to further support the Waterloo Warriors in becoming a worldclass women’s basketball program.”

Roque had a decorated playing career, as well, suiting up for the Cleveland State University Vikings for four seasons (20062010), twice winning the Horizon League Championship as co-captain. Roque graduated from CSU with honours and a bachelors of science in health science. She then went on to graduate school, graduating with honours and a master of education in exercise science.

“I cannot wait to be back on campus and in the gym with our student-athletes.”
