Waterloo Region Record

Do we really need such an elaborate transit hub?

-

The Region of Waterloo is contemplating two major issues.

First, there is the proposal to close region-owned child-care centres.

KPMG, a consulting firm, found the region could possibly save $6.8 million by doing this. That is not an insignificant amount.

The region has a diamond standard child-care plan in existence. It’s the very best service that people and our children can receive.

The second item of interest is the new transit hub that is being financed by $43 million from the province.

The hub will hopefully transform the way people see the region.

Ellen McGaghey, the project director, told a local television station: “Does it say that you have arrived at a significant place that’s booming and doing well and has an economy that you might want to invest in?”

I think it wise for some financial adviser to clearly state that investors of the type the Region of Waterloo seeks do not arrive in our fine jurisdiction by bus.

Not that there is anything wrong with bus transportation, I have used it many times myself.

But, to quote an old saying, it is not smart to be pennywise and pound-foolish.

It might also be said that no bus ever elected a regional councillor.
