Decorate platter based on Japanese, Chinese designs
Q. This platter came from my Nova Scotian great-grandmother. There is a maker’s mark “Chinese Tree” and in the upper right corner is ‘2708.’ It measures 20 wide by 28 cm long (8 x 11 inches). I’m hoping you can tell me about it — especially an approximate age. This will help determine whether or not they originally belonged to my great-great-grandparents, as my mother believed. Thanks. Bruce, Kanata, Ont.
A. Many English ceramic companies, in the 18th and early 19th centuries were basing their designs on earlier Japanese and Chinese designs. This polychrome pattern was used by the Minton company — sometimes in partnerships such as Minton & Hollins. The interesting mark, with a woven beehive coupled with the pattern number, dates it to between 1836 and the 1940s placing it in the hands of your very early grandparents — imported to Nova Scotia for a special event and gift. It is quite decorative and will serve up $225.
Q. These two bottle openers have been around our family for as long as I can remember. They are quite heavy with the alligator being 15 cm long and the rooster standing 7.5 cm tall (6 and 3 inches). I’m not sure what they’re made of. I like the feel and look of the metal. Might these have any value?
