Cathy Brothers recognized as Citizen of the Year
Cathy Brothers, known for her work in health and social service, is being recognized as the 64th Kitchener-Waterloo Citizen of the Year.
The Lions Club of Kitchener will present Brooks with the award on May 30 at the Waterloo campus of Conestoga College at its annual awards gala.
“I am grateful to live in a community in which I can be myself, I can work hard, and I can feel loved and valued by so many beautiful friends,” said Brothers in a news release. “Thank you, Lions Club of Kitchener, for considering me a worthy Citizen of the Year.”
Brothers has served as director of community services at St. Mary’s General Hospital, executive director at Carizon Family and Community Services, and a teacher of social policy at the University of Guelph.
In 2010, she became the founding chief executive of Capacity Canada, a position she still holds today.
Her extensive board service includes organizations such as St. Jerome’s University, Rotary Club of Kitchener-Westmount, Family Service Ontario and St. Mary’s hospital. She has received numerous honours and awards for her contributions, including recognition as one of Laurier’s 100 Alumni of Distinction and the St. Mary’s Mission Legacy Award for exceptional service.
The Citizen of the Year Award was first presented to Ira Needles in 1957; subsequent winners have included Elizabeth Witmer, Neil Aitchison, Ron Schlegel, Mandy Bujold and Jim Hallman.
The awards gala is the Lions Club’s premier fundraising initiative.
Seats are limited. Table and sponsorship opportunities are available by contacting Marydaltonirish@gmail.com or drjdbishop@hotmail.com. Individual tickets may be available in May.
