Seasonal road closure returns to Galt and Hespeler downtowns

- BILL DOUCET REPORTER

Sections of Main and Queen streets in Cambridge will once again be pedestrian-only.

Beginning in 2020, as a way to encourage patrons to frequent businesses in both downtown Galt and Hespeler during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city, in partnership with both BIAs, began the seasonal road closure program.

In Galt, Main Street is closed to vehicles between Water and Ainslie streets. Queen Street in Hespeler restricts vehicle traffic between Guelph Avenue and Tannery Street.

This year, Main Street will be closed every day from May 17 to Oct. 14, while Queen Street will be closed weekends only, from May 31 to Sept. 1. The weekend closure begins Friday at 4 p.m., before reopening Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Hespeler closure is dubbed #Walkqueen.

Brian Kennedy, executive director of the Downtown Cambridge BIA, said the seasonal road closure has been a resounding success, with the community and BIA member supporting its continuation.

In December 2023, the city sought feedback from both the public and BIA membership, and the results revealed more than 75 per cent of respondents want to see the annual summer closures continue.

“When you visit during the summer, Main Street transforms into a pedestrian-friendly area, teeming with lively patios, music and events. It truly feels like stepping into a European piazza right here in Cambridge,” Kennedy said.

Cory de Villiers, chair of the Hespeler Village BIA, said the seasonal road closures have become an event in Hespeler. One of the highlights in Hespeler are Latin dance nights, filling the street with a party atmosphere.

This year, there will also be cultural events and concerts.

“The village is home to a host of new and exciting restaurants, and patios featuring scents and tastes from around the world,” he said.
