The Black-footed Fer­ret nearly be­came ex­tinct when lo­cal farm­ers gave their favourite prey, the prairie dog, the boot from their land. Th­ese fer­rets need prairie dogs to stay alive. A fam­ily of four fer­rets will eat 763 prairie dogs in a sin­gle year. Af­ter they hunt prairie dogs out in their bur­rows, fer­rets will make them­selves at home in the aban­doned digs.
