Canterbury Eldercollege is building on the success of its first term with a new session featuring 54 courses for people over 55.

“I’m thrilled about this — we are offering courses in every community in the county (as well as 27 in Windsor), and this is only our second term,” founder Lloyd Brown- John said Friday.

The second term starts with cross-country ski programs in a couple of weeks, with other courses kicking off Feb. 27.

Dubbed “brain food” for people seeking new experiences and the chance to meet new people, the course topics range from: Shakespeare plays at Stratford; a four-day art and architecture trip to Chicago; the Titanic; the War of 1812, computer skills; opera; classical music; law; the heritage, history, geology and wine of Pelee Island; and a course on the Lake Erie fishery aboard a fishing boat in Kingsville harbour.

“It’s an enormous array of courses,” said Brown-john, a retired University of Windsor professor.

Last semester, 255 people took a total of 29 courses. Fees range from $25 to $45. The instructors are volunteers who want to share their expertise.

“What’s really cool with all of this is the telephone rings and someone says ‘I’ve got an idea for a course,’ and away you go with it,” Brown-john said.

A booklet on the courses is coming out in a couple of weeks. For information, go to uwindsor.ca/canterbury/eldercollege, or contact coordinator Catherine Fettes at fettesc@uwindsor.ca or 519253-3000, ext. 4944.
