Agosta gets attention of Essex Thunder girls

Seguin records five points in Flyers victory

A room packed with girls between seven and 14 years old is ripe for a gab fest.

Instead, no one, other than the day’s guest speaker, said a word.

“You could have heard a pin drop,” said director Lesley Tofflemire of Olympian Meghan Agosta’s Sunday morning visit with members of the Essex Thunder girls hockey program. “I’m sure she inspired quite a few girls today.”

Agosta, the Ruthven native who went on to win Olympic gold with Canada’s women’s hockey team, shared her story with players from five different teams and then took the ice with many of them to run through some drills.

“I just tell them anything is possible,” said Agosta of her visit back to Essex county from her home in Montreal. “If they set goals, dream big and believe in themselves. I made a lot of sacrifices because I wanted to be the best.”

Agosta knew she wanted to make Canada’s Olympic team when she was six years old.

“If I can inspire just one person to do something special I would honoured,” she said.

Agosta often comes back this way to give back to minor hockey and has plans to start her first hockey school, July 9-20, at the UCCU Arena in Amherstburg.
