South Woodslee native and former Essex Ravens quarterback Kyle Quinlan has been named head coach and offensive co-ordinator of the Holland College Hurricanes in Prince Edward Island.

The 26-year-old Quinlan led McMaster to its first Vanier Cup title in 2011 where he was named the game’s most valuable player.

He won the Hec Crighton Trophy winner in 2012 and was named CIS male athlete of the year in 2013.

Quinlan attended camp with the Montreal Alouettes, but chose not to pursue a pro career and opted to rejoin McMaster as the schools’ running backs coach.

Quinlan replaces Andrew Hickey, who is leading the team to pursue graduate studies in sports management at the University of New Brunswick.

“There was a lot of interest and fortunately Kyle Quinlan was very excited about the opportunity,” Hurricanes president Michael O’Grady said on the team’s website.

“We are as thrilled as he is to have him as part of our community. We expect a seamless transition from Andrew to Kyle.”

Holland College, which is located in Charlottetown, is part of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Hurricanes, who have captured the two most recent Moosehead Cup championships, are considered a club team at the school.
