Lancers finish comeback with OT win

Tyson Ness scored early in overtime as the University of Windsor Lancers men’s hockey team completed a comeback upset of the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday in OUA playoff action.

Ness scored at 4:14 of overtime as the sixth-seeded Lancers beat the third-seeded Golden Hawks 3-2 to win the best-of-three West Division quarter-final series 2-1 by winning the final two games of the series.

EXPRESS STREAK SNAPPED

The Windsor Express saw its four-game unbeaten streak in the NBL of Canada come to an end on Sunday in a 107-98 loss to the Niagara River Lions at the WFCU Centre. Niagara built a nine-point lead after the first quarter, extended the lead to 20 at the half and never looked back.

LANCER BASKETBALL

The University Windsor Lancers women’s and men’s basketball team split on the final day of the OUA regular season on Saturday at the St. Denis Centre.

The No. 6-ranked Windsor women’s team rolled to an 86-49 win over the Brock Badgers while the men’s team fell 91-69 to No. 4-ranked Brock.

In the women’s game, Carly Steer led the Lancers with 24 points. Caitlyn Longmuir and Cheyanne Roger each finished with 16 points while Emily Prevost had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Windsor, which won the West Division with a 16-4 record and will host a playoff game on Saturday.

In the men’s game, Mike Rocca and Micqueel Martin each had 14 points and Anthony Zrvnar chipped in with 11 points for the Lancers.

FLYERS WIN IN OT

Cale Phibbs scored at 4:29 of the second overtime period as the Leamington Flyers beat the Sarnia Legionnair­es 5-4 on the road in Western Conference play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League on Saturday.

Nicolas Mainella, Brett Vorshuk and Jaydon Fetter each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers.
