TILL COUP DO THEM PART: PRESIDENT MAKES HIS WIFE SECOND IN COMMAND

-

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN Ladies, can your man make you vicepresident of a country?

Probably not. Unless, of course, you happen to be the wife of the president of Azerbaijan.

Putting all other power couples to shame, President Ilham Aliyev made his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, vicepresident, the first since the position was created last year. She is now set to succeed her husband should he ever step down from the role.

Aliyev took over as president from his father in 2003, and was re-elected in 2008 in a boycotted election.

But there probably won’t be any boycotts of this appointment. Journalist Khadija Ismayilova wrote, “Wave of arrests preceded Mehriban Aliyeva’s appointment to vice-president position. Just in case if someone would dare to protest.”
