Man, 45, charged in city’s first homicide of the year

A 19-year-old man is dead and another man is in custody after a dispute between them ended in a fatal gunshot — Windsor’s first homicide of the year.

David Formosa, 45, of Windsor, is facing a charge of first-degree murder.

On Wednesday, Windsor police continued to scour the crime scene at 760 University Ave. E. where the shooting is believed to have taken place the night before.

“It’s always happening around here,” said neighbourhood resident Ken Seguin. “A lot of violence.”

Police were called after the victim turned up at a hospital with a serious gunshot wound around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigation led to the house on University Avenue. Detectives learned that the victim and the alleged shooter knew each other.

Around 10:45 p.m., police located the suspect at an apartment unit in the 8700 block of Riverside Drive East. He was arrested without incident. Meanwhile, the victim succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

The residence remained cordoned off with police tape on Wednesday — along with a neighbouring property, the duplex at 744-750 University Ave. E.

Seguin said the dispute was over a female who lives at the duplex — the girlfriend of the 19-year-old deceased.

He said the alleged shooter is an uncle to the girl, and he argued with the younger man about how she was being treated.

According to Seguin, the older man and the 19-year-old male had an angry confrontation in the yard outside the home at 760 University Ave. E.

“I seen the whole thing,” Seguin said. “I seen the kid out here, egging the guy inside to come out.”

Seguin said he didn’t hear a gunshot. Both men fled the area after the confrontation.

“I didn’t even know the kid was in the hospital. I thought he just took off. He got in a vehicle and that was it,” Seguin said.

Others in the neighbourhood said the name of the deceased is Dallas Nelson.

Tributes to Nelson have begun appearing on social media, describing him as “a true rider” who would “give up anything for his boys.”

An aspiring rapper, Nelson posted tracks of his music on SoundCloud and other online platforms — telling profanity-laced tales of a hard life.

“I can’t wait — Death is the best thing that could happen. Besides trapping, the only thing I did good was rapping,” Nelson wrote in one of his most recent songs.

“My enemies jealous, so they want me dead in plastic, cremated into ashes, maybe open casket.”

A GoFundMe page has been started to help Nelson’s family with the funeral costs.

“Dallas was an amazing brother, son, and friend to those who knew him, and a humble, kind person to those who didn’t,” wrote Sydney Filiault, who set up the page.

Police executed search warrants on Wednesday in their pursuit of more evidence.

Investigators are still seeking information from the public about the case. Anyone who knows something is asked to call 519-255-6700 ext. 4830.
