Windsor Star

A TOAST TO TED WHIPP

St. Clair College to salute former Star food writer

He was the Windsor Star’s word on food for decades — but now it’s Ted Whipp’s turn to be the subject of the culinary community’s attention.

On March 3, readers, restaurateurs, chefs, and St. Clair College’s hospitality and journalism programs will gather to honour the retired columnist.

“Ted Whipp was more than just a journalist on the food page. He truly was one of the first community people you could call a ‘foodie,’ ” said St. Clair College spokesman John Fairley.

The fundraising dinner and conversation will take place fittingly at St. Clair College’s Eatery 101. Whipp has been a supporter and promoter of the college’s culinary, hospitality, and journalism programs for years.

Proceeds from the event will go toward creation of a scholarship in Whipp’s name, meant for culinary, hospitality, and journalism students.

“I never thought I would meet someone more excited about food than me — until I met Ted Whipp,” marvelled chef Mike Jimmerfield, a faculty member at St. Clair College.

For his part, Whipp described the upcoming event as “humbling.”

“People who know me will laugh when I say this, but I was totally speechless when I found out about it,” Whipp said. “If it’s all for the students, then it’s all good for me.”

Despite leaving the newsroom in 2013, Whipp still feels the urge to fire up a word processor and do some food-related writing — although it’s against his doctor’s orders.

“Food has power,” Whipp said, philosophically. “It brings people together. We reunite, we refresh. With all that’s going on in the world, food can reduce or destroy hate. Because when you break bread with people, you share. You exchange.”

“Windsor especially. Windsor loves food. I’m excited by all the young people getting together and doing creative things right now. There are marvellous things going on.”

Break Bread With Ted takes place March 3 at Eatery 101 on the St. Clair College campus (2000 Talbot Rd. West). Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., a five-course gourmet menu dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. Business casual attire recommended. Tickets are $75. Tables for parties of four and eight are available. Call 519-972-2726 or email eatery101@stclaircollege.ca to reserve your place.
