Lancers take gold, silver and bronze

Windsor fails to defend its OUA title, but individual athletes continue to shine

Despite some strong individual performanc­es, the University of Windsor Lancers men’s track and field team was unable to defend its OUA track and field team title.

The men’s team finished in third place while the women’s team finished fourth overall at the championsh­ips, which wrapped up on Saturday in Toronto.

On the men’s side, Corey Bellemore won three medals at the meet. He teamed with Taylor McArthur, Joe Kagumba and Nick MacMackin to win the men’s 4×800-metre relay in 7:31.83. He also took bronze medals in the 600 metres in 1:1925 and the 1,000 metres in 2:23.87.

Eli Pawliw won the shot put with a throw of 17.13 metres and took a silver medal in the weight throw with a toss of 17.09 metres.

Chris Waugh also won a gold medal and set a new school record in the men’s pole vault by clearing 5.11 metres.

Brett Boersma won a bronze medal in shot put with a throw of 15.81 metres and Angelo Bortolin won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a leap of 13.49 metres.

On the women’s side, Sarah Mitton won the shot put with a throw of 15.75 metres.

Emily Omahen won a silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.91 metres. Rachel Wolfs also took silver in the pole vault by clearing 3.90 metres and the 4×400-metre relay team of Courteney Rivait, Stephanie Shaw, Kristy Hodgins and Alexia Lamothe won silver in 3:48.73.

Jill Van Damme won a bronze medal in the weight throw with a toss of 17 metres.

EXPRESS EDGE RIVER LIONS

It took five attempts, but the Windsor Express finally posted a win over the Niagara River Lions.

The Express rallied from a sixpoint deficit after three quarters for a 93-92 win over the River Lions at the WFCU Centre on Saturday.

Darren Duncan had 20 points and 10 assists for the Express (912) and Juan Pattillo also added 20 points in the win that moved Windsor into second place in the Central Division.

Nick Evans finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Warren Ward and Wally Ellenson each scored 10 points against the River Lions (7-11).

Prior to the game, the Express announced former Windsor Lancers guard Alex Campbell had been released and the team has signed guard Marvin Binney, who is from Toronto.

FLYERS BEAT PREDATORS

The Leamington Flyers closed out the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season with an 8-3 road victory over the Lambton Shores Predators on Saturday. Brett Vorshuk led the Flyers with two goals for Leamington, which will face Sarnia in the quarter-finals.

SAINTS BASKETBALL SPLITS

The St. Clair College Saints women’s basketball team advanced to the OCAA quarter-finals after a 66-63 playoff win over the Durham Lords in Oshawa on Saturday.

Shannon Kennedy led the Saints with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints, who will face Humber on Thursday in the quarter-finals.

The men’s team saw its season come to an end with an 80-76 loss on the road to the Seneca Sting. Wiliam Lara-Caston had 17 points for the Saints.

DUFOUR TAKES SILVER

Belle River’s Jade Dufour took the silver medal in the women’s 51kg division on Saturday at the U Sports Wrestling championsh­ips in Winnipeg.

A sophomore at Concordia University in Montreal, Dufour won her semifinal match 5-4, but was unable to compete in the final due to an injury and was awarded the silver medal.
