Go to the library and pick up a book

Re: Readers delighted to turn the page on library strike, by Julie Kotsis, Feb. 18. This story got me thinking about the library in my own neighbourhood. Other young people in my school and in my community use our public library much less than we used to.

A library is an amazing place for learning, discovering, researching, and spending time with family and friends, and I think that there should be more encouragement for people to use the library more often.

First, it would be a great idea to obtain new materials in libraries. Since many people buy books all the time from bookstores and end up only reading them once, they should donate their old books to their local library rather than letting them sit on shelves collecting dust.

Also, the library is an amazing place to work and to do research. If the library had more computers for students and other people to use, then they might attract more people to their doors. Computers play a huge role in this day and age, and if the library were more a part of the technological world, more people would be interested.

Next, community activities and events bring people together. Although the library is a popular location for events, I often find that they are not well advertised and do not happen often.

To attract more people, the library could plan more events, activities and clubs for people of all ages and should advertise more around the neighbourhood.

Growing up, the library was a big part of my life, and for good reason. The library is a great place for everyone in the community to come together.

With everyone on their cellphones these days, it would benefit all of us to pick up a good book.
