Man in custody in deadly shooting

First-degree murder charge laid against 53-year-old Windsor male

- JULIE KOTSIS

A Windsor man was charged on Sunday with first-degree murder following the shooting death of a 59-year-old man.

William Green, 53, has been in police custody since the shooting late Friday night at a duplex in the 900 block of Elsmere Avenue, just north of Erie Street. Green was arrested at the scene.

When police arrived just after midnight Saturday, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he died later that day. Police have not released his name.

They said the suspect and the victim knew each other.

On Saturday morning, the house at 924 Elsmere Ave. was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Several police vehicles were parked on the street.

Several nearby residents said they didn’t hear anything until police arrived just after midnight. Many refused to be identified and said they didn’t know the names of the individuals involved in the incident.

“He looked like such a nice man,” one neighbour said of the victim.

“All the time, he passed back and forth, said hi,” said the elderly woman who identified herself as Rina. “For me, he looked nice, but you never know.”

Rina said she feels safe in the home she’s lived in since 1961. She said there are some “bad” neighbours but not a lot of crime.

A young mom, who did not want to be identified, said she had talked briefly on occasion with her now deceased neighbour but she didn’t know his name and she had never been in his house.

She said a shooting last year a block away has made her nervous about the neighbourhood where she has rented a home with her husband and young children since 2014.

“This neighbourhood has been concerning and very trying for me and my family,” she said Saturday. “I don’t even play with toy guns with my sons.

“We’re not planning on being here permanently.”

The woman said police are constantly watching the neighbourhood and “there’s a couple of houses that they come to on a regular basis.”

Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene of the crime, but investigators said they do not believe there is any threat to public safety.

Detectives from the major crimes branch continue to investigate the incident.
